Bessie's Song To Her Doll
MATILDA JANE, you never look At any toy or picture-book. I show you pretty things in vain- -You must be blind, Matilda Jane! I ask you riddles, tell you tales, But all our conversation fails. You never answer me again- -I fear you're dumb, Matilda Jane! Matilda darling, when I call, You never seem to hear at all. I shout with all my might and main --But you're so deaf, Matilda Jane! Matilda Jane, you needn't mind, For, though you're deaf and dumb and blind, There's some one loves you, it is plain- -And that is me, Matilda Jane! |
Analyzing of Bessie's Song To Her Doll
In this poem Lewis has different poetic uses such as, Repetition, Lewis repeats the phrase Matilda Jane! in every stanza. This shows how Bessie is angry at her doll that she is not talking back and not responding to anything the Bessie is saying. Rhyme, There is a lot of rhyme in this poem like book and look, vain and Jane, tales and fails. This makes the poem sound more childish and as if a child is saying this poem. Alliteration, The is only a little bit of alliteration in this poem like when Bessie says might and main or deaf and dumb. The tone of this poem is very childish because everything that Bessie is talking about is things that adults would not worry about. She talks about tales and picture-books. |
The Crocodile
How doth the little crocodile Improve his shining tail, And pour the waters of the Nile On every golden scale! How cheerfully he seems to grin How neatly spreads his claws, And welcomes little fishes in, With gently smiling jaws! |
Analyzing The Crocodile
This poem the crocodile as you can tell is very short and does not use a lot of poetic devices. The main one is rhyme such as: crocodile,Nile and tail, scale. This poem is also very well structured in the way that both stanzas have 4 lines and the same amount of words. This poem has a lot of description of the crocodile and its surrounding. This poem makes the crocodile sound like a nice animal and that it would not be mean. But once we get to the end Lewis still tells us that its not a good animal. He is basically telling us that not everyone is who they say they are. |
A BOAT BENEATH A SUNNY SKY
A BOAT beneath a sunny sky, Lingering onward dreamily In an evening of July -- Children three that nestle near, Eager eye and willing ear, Pleased a simple tale to hear -- Long has paled that sunny sky: Echoes fade and memories die: Autumn frosts have slain July. Still she haunts me, phantomwise, Alice moving under skies Never seen by waking eyes. Children yet, the tale to hear, Eager eye and willing ear, Lovingly shall nestle near. In a Wonderland they lie, Dreaming as the days go by, Dreaming as the summers die: Ever drifting down the stream -- Lingering in the golden dream -- Life, what is it but a dream? |
Analyzing A Boat Beneath A Sunny Sky
This poem is no ordinary poem, its a acrostic poem. This means that the first letter of each line makes a word. But in this case it makes a name. That name is: Alice Pleasance Liddell. Which is the name of the girl that the story of Alice in Wonderland is named after. This poem also has rhyming like in sky, July and hear, ear, near. This poem also has use of repetition. Lewis repeats the words sky and July twice as well as the words near, ear and hear. This poem makes a very clear image in your brain because of the way that Lewis describes the scenery with the idea of the children and the pale sunny sky. The mood of this poem is very happy because of the description of a bright sunny day which makes the audience feel and and want to keep reading. |
